Press-welded grating – maximum stability for industry and construction

A welded press-formed grating (also known as a welded press grating) is a heavy-duty grating comprising bearing bars and twisted infill bars, which are permanently joined at every intersection under pressure using the resistance welding process. The result: extreme rigidity, high load-bearing capacity and a slip-resistant surface – ideal for walkways, platforms, stair treads and stage decking.

Why choose welded press-formed gratings?

  • Fully welded joints – every intersection is permanently bonded; nothing comes loose.
  • Excellent load-bearing capacity – unweakened bearing bars distribute the load optimally.
  • Slip resistance – twisted (square) infill bars improve grip.
  • Perfect for further processing – cutting to size, cut-outs and custom finishing are easily achievable.
  • Corrosion protection – usually hot-dip galvanised, but also available in stainless steel or powder-coated on request.

Typical applications

Oil & gas industry, mining, power stations, mechanical engineering, chemicals, food industry, warehouse technology, façade and architectural applications, as well as public infrastructure (e.g. maintenance walkways, shafts, drainage channels).

Technical specifications

  • Support bars: e.g. 25/2, 30/3, 40/3, 50/4 mm (flat steel)
  • Filling bars: twisted (typically 6 mm) for a slip-resistant surface
  • Mesh sizes: standard 30×30, 30×10, 33×33, 34×38 mm – others available on request
  • Finishes: bare, hot-dip galvanised, stainless steel, optionally colour-coated
  • Edging: all-round flat bar / frame for clean edges and load distribution

How to choose the right welded grating

  1. Define the application: type of traffic, loads, slip resistance, indoor/outdoor.
  2. Select geometry: external dimensions, mesh size, bearing bar profile, edging.
  3. Specify the surface finish: hot-dip galvanised, stainless steel or coated.
  4. Customisations: cut-outs, drill holes, welded-on parts, slip-resistant step profiles.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about welded press-formed gratings

How is a welded press-locked grating manufactured?

Bearing bars (flat steel) and twisted infill bars are laid out in a criss-cross pattern and welded at each intersection using resistance welding under high current and pressure. The grating is then edged with flat bar and, optionally, hot-dip galvanised.

What is the difference compared to a ‘normal’ grating?

With welded press-locked gratings, all joints are welded – this ensures maximum rigidity and durability. With other types of grating (e.g. press-locked gratings), cross-bars are pressed into and locked into support profiles; this is lighter and often cheaper, but offers less resistance to twisting under very high loads.

What mesh sizes are recommended?

For walkways and platforms, 30×30 mm or 33×33 mm are commonly used. For enhanced slip resistance and better load distribution, 30×10 mm is often used. Standards, safety requirements and ease of cleaning should also be taken into account.

How is slip resistance achieved?

Through twisted infill bars, optional sawtooth profiles on the support bars, step nosing profiles and suitable mesh sizes. For outdoor use, a coarser texture and hot-dip galvanising are also recommended.

What materials are available?

The standard material is S235JR steel (uncoated or hot-dip galvanised). For corrosive environments, we offer stainless steel (e.g. 1.4301/1.4571) or a powder coating in RAL colours.

Can a welded press-formed grating be machined afterwards?

Yes. Thanks to the fully welded joints, cutting to size, cut-outs and drilled holes can be carried out very precisely and permanently. Any reworking should subsequently be treated with a corrosion-protective finish (e.g. zinc dust paint).

What information do you need for a quotation?

External dimensions, mesh size, cross-section of the support bars, material/surface finish, quantity, type of edging and any required modifications (drawing/sketch). We will draw up a tailor-made quotation based on this information.
