LUNORA® LED Stainless Steel Handrail: Modular Perfection for Continuous Stair Lighting at FeNau

Lighting for stairs, walkways, and escape routes presents architects, planners, and metalworkers with unique challenges. It's not just about meeting standards, but seamlessly integrating light into building architecture. With the LUNORA® LED handrail system, FeNau offers an uncompromising, modular LED system solution [cite: 13], specifically developed for continuous lighting [cite: 5]. Designed for classic round groove tubes with an exact diameter of 42.4 mm [cite: 14], this system combines timeless stainless steel aesthetics with state-of-the-art lighting technology.

The LUNORA® system is not an ordinary railing component but a highly complex lighting tool. It guarantees glare-free, absolutely uniform, and above all continuous illumination [cite: 14]. Where point lighting solutions cast shadows or create the "zebra effect" on stair treads, LUNORA® creates a continuous light band that brings maximum safety, excellent spatial orientation, and a high-quality, purist aesthetic to any construction project.

The Technological Innovation: Asymmetric Lens Technology

A common problem with commercially available LED handrails is uncontrolled light emission. Without precise guidance, the LED strip emits light vertically downwards. The result: the wall on which the handrail is mounted is strongly and often dazzlingly illuminated, while the centre of the stair tread remains in semi-darkness. The LUNORA® system solves this problem with a state-of-the-art, integrable lens [cite: 31].

Inside the LUNORA® handrail, this specially tuned lens ensures that the light emitted by the LED strip is not simply scattered but is specifically bundled [cite: 35]. The light is asymmetrically refracted and optimally directed over the entire running surface at the perfect angle [cite: 14, 35]. The result is impressive: a significantly larger area is illuminated than with systems without a lens [cite: 36]. Even in absolute darkness, every step edge, every landing, and every obstacle remains clearly in view [cite: 36], while unwanted stray light on the walls is reduced to an absolute minimum. This protects the eyes and significantly increases safety.

Thought Through to the Last Detail: The 180° Reversible Aluminium Profile

The basis of the LUNORA® system consists of a few but extremely precisely coordinated components [cite: 37, 61]. The absolute highlight and the technical heart is the multifunctional reversible aluminium profile [cite: 66]. This carrier profile, which sits inside the stainless steel groove tube, solves the space problems that often arise when using different LED protection classes.

The profile is precisely 180° rotatable [cite: 76, 77]. This means: one side of the profile is precisely milled for the narrower IP00 LED strips (for dry indoor areas), while the other, deeper side precisely accommodates the wider, water- and dust-protected IP65 LED strips (for outdoor areas and damp rooms) [cite: 72, 75]. Thus, you only need one carrier profile system for both indoor and outdoor applications. To make installation as error-free as possible, the profile has precisely laser-cut guide lines [cite: 73]. These guarantee the exact, central positioning of the LED strips when gluing [cite: 73, 86], which is essential for absolutely straight and homogeneous light emission.

Homogeneous Light Without Compromise: The PMMA Cover

Nothing disrupts the architectural image more than individually visible, glaring LED diodes reflecting on the floor. To prevent this, the LUNORA® system is completed with a special, opaque cover made of high-quality PMMA plastic (polymethyl methacrylate) [cite: 37]. This diffuse cover not only protects the sensitive LED system from mechanical influences and dirt but also acts as a highly efficient diffuser [cite: 37, 69]. It refracts the light of the individual diodes so strongly that they merge into a single, flowing, and absolutely homogeneous light line. No visible light points are created [cite: 37].

Premium LED Specifications for the Highest Demands

FeNau relies on uncompromising professional quality for the electronic components of the LUNORA® system [cite: 55]. The self-adhesive LED strips used operate with a safe 24 V DC low voltage [cite: 43, 67]. They are highly efficient and deliver an enormous luminous flux of 1500 lumens per metre with a power consumption of only 13.2 watts per metre [cite: 46].

To perfectly adapt the lighting mood to your object, two carefully selected light colours are available [cite: 14]:

  • Warm White (2700 K): Ideal for inviting living areas, gastronomy, hotels, or wooden stairs, where a cosy, warm atmosphere is paramount [cite: 39, 44].
  • Neutral White (4000 K): Perfect for office buildings, hospitals, public facilities, and modern concrete or stone architecture. This light colour maximises contrasts and ensures the highest alertness and safety [cite: 40, 44].

The strips are extremely flexible in use: they can be precisely shortened every 50 mm [cite: 47, 85] and are supplied in generous lengths of 6,000 mm or even 25,000 mm for long stair runs [cite: 49]. Naturally, all electronic components are fully CE-marked [cite: 18, 50, 52] and RoHS-certified [cite: 50, 53].

Intelligent Control and Easy Installation

The LUNORA® system can be seamlessly integrated into modern building management technology. The LED strips are fully dimmable and compatible with PWM controls (pulse width modulation) [cite: 48]. In combination with our Bluetooth and dimmable power supplies, the lighting system can be smartly controlled via app or switch [cite: 14], to retrieve the perfect brightness depending on the time of day or requirement.

For the metalworker, LUNORA® means massive time savings during installation [cite: 56]. The attachment of the carrier profile in the stainless steel tube is done via clever mounting clips with a click function [cite: 65]. These clips are screwed (M4 x 8) or riveted into the groove tube at a distance of about 250 mm (at least two per section) [cite: 82, 83]. The equipped carrier profile is then simply and securely clipped into these clips [cite: 83]. The entire cable routing disappears invisibly: cables are invisibly routed through the hollow handrail carriers directly into the wall or along the groove in the direction of the supply line [cite: 84].

Building to Standards and Support for Lighting Planners

Especially in public spaces, stair lighting is subject to strict legal requirements. The LUNORA® system was explicitly designed to support architects in complying with these standards. It meets the high requirements for installation according to DIN 18040 (Barrier-free building in public buildings and apartments) [cite: 20, 24, 25] as well as DIN 18065 (Building stairs) [cite: 21, 26, 27].

To make the planning basics as efficient as possible, we provide architects, planners, and the trade with all necessary data [cite: 114]. The LED system is fully integrable into professional lighting planning software [cite: 14]. We offer you the corresponding Eulumdat files, photometric data, as well as detailed CAD data and tender texts [cite: 14, 114]. From the first design phase in the office to professional installation on the construction site, the process becomes more precise and efficient [cite: 115].

Simple and Safe Installation: The LUNORA® Installation Steps

The LUNORA® system has been developed to not only impress visually but also to offer maximum efficiency during installation by metalworkers. The installation of the modular system is carried out in a few logical steps:

  1. Cut profiles and covers: In the first step, groove tube, carrier profiles, covers, and the optional lens are cut to size [cite: 80]. Measure the carrier profile, cover, and lens precisely between the handrail holders [cite: 80].
  2. Prepare mounting: Measure the positions between the handrail carriers and set the corresponding drill holes [cite: 81]. Then set the threads or drill holes for the mounting clips – plan a clip every 250 mm (at least two per section) [cite: 82].
  3. Mount clips and handrail attachment: Screw the mounting clips (M 4 x 8) or use rivets [cite: 83]. Attach the handrail carriers and simply clip in the carrier profile cut-outs [cite: 83]. For cable routing, guide the cables through hollow handrail carriers if necessary and lay them along the groove in the direction of the supply line if needed [cite: 84].
  4. Cut and apply LED strips: Shorten the LED strips at the marked cut points (every 50 mm) precisely to the desired length [cite: 85]. Then thoroughly degrease the profile, align the LED strip, peel off the adhesive surface, and press it firmly along the laser-cut guide lines [cite: 86].
  5. Connect power: Install the connectors and establish the connection between the supply cable and the LED strip [cite: 87]. Important safety note: The final connection to the power grid must only be carried out by a licensed electrical installer [cite: 87].
  6. Insert optical components: In the final step, insert the optional lens and clip in the PMMA cover for a clean finish [cite: 88].
