Maximum safety for critical infrastructure: Discover the MEASTEP XSL stair tread – Europe’s leading system tread for heavy-duty industrial staircases and certified escape routes.

No compromises can be made when planning escape routes, industrial buildings and public staircases. If you are looking for a stair tread that is suitable and certified for escape staircases, the MEASTEP XSL is the absolute gold standard in modern steel construction. As a specialised system grating tread, it offers architects, structural engineers and building owners the perfect combination of enormous load-bearing capacity, minimal dead weight and maximum slip resistance.

MEASTEP XSL: Developed by MEA, manufactured to master craftsmanship by MEISER

An important detail for designers and long-standing customers: the revolutionary MEASTEP XSL stair treads were originally developed and brought to market by MEA Metal Applications GmbH. Following strategic restructuring within the industry, this highly specialised grating step is now manufactured by the renowned MEISER Group, one of the world’s leading grating producers, using identical tools and patents.

For your construction projects, this means absolute planning reliability: you receive exactly the same tried-and-tested design and all standard approvals in proven quality. Further technical background information on the original system can also be found directly on the developer’s official MEASTEP XSL information page.

The ingenious design secret: support bars welded along the short side

What makes the XSL stair tread so incredibly stable compared to standard gratings? The secret lies in a brilliant manufacturing technique that has revolutionised the structural integrity of the tread: the support bar is welded along the short side.

This innovative arrangement allows significantly more support bars to be integrated into exactly the same tread area as in conventionally manufactured grating steps. The result is an exponentially higher load-bearing capacity and bending stiffness, whilst simultaneously significantly reducing the weight of the material. This intelligent load transfer makes the XSL step the unrivalled choice when extreme spans (up to 1,500 mm) need to be realised without additional joists.

Certified for escape and rescue routes (DIN EN 1991-1-1)

Not every grating step may be installed as an escape staircase. When it comes to saving lives, the stringent Eurocode 1 (DIN EN 1991-1-1) applies. MEASTEP XSL stair treads have been developed precisely to meet these extreme standard requirements.

They are officially rated for the high load categories T1 and T2. This means that in the event of an evacuation, when a large crowd in a state of panic places a simultaneous load on the staircase, these steps effortlessly absorb the enormous dynamic and static forces without yielding or undergoing plastic deformation. With the XSL series, you are always on the absolutely safe side, both legally and in terms of structural engineering.

The dual function of the safety nosing

To prevent panic-induced falls on escape staircases, every XSL step features a prominently raised safety nosing. This offers two life-saving advantages:

  • Visual perception: The tread edge stands out clearly from the grating structure. Even in poor lighting conditions or when descending in a hurry, the edge of the step is clearly visible.
  • Extreme slip resistance: The edge is specially profiled and gives the entire step a certified slip resistance rating of classes R 11 to R 13. Whether it’s heavy rain, snow or industrial lubricants – the foot finds immediate, unshakeable grip.

The comprehensive FeNau system comparison: XSL vs. standard grating step

Which stair tread is right for your project? Our direct comparison clearly shows you when you should opt for the XSL premium tread and when our robust standard models are sufficient:

Technical Specification MEASTEP XSL (The escape route step) Standard grating step
Static design Supporting bar across the short side: maximum number of bars for extreme rigidity. Classic welded or pressed grating structure.
Approval for escape staircases Yes, without restriction in accordance with DIN EN 1991-1-1 (Eurocode 1). No, designed in accordance with DIN 1055-3 / DIN 24531.
Slip resistance Highest industry standard: R 11 to R 13 High safety: R 10 to R 11
Load category Categories T1 & T2 (escape and rescue routes) Point load 2.0 kN / Area load 5.00 kN/m²
Installation & fit XSL system side plates with highly flexible slotted/round-hole drilling pattern. Standardised side fixing brackets.

Maximum corrosion protection: hot-dip galvanised to last a lifetime

The basis of every MEASTEP XSL step is first-class S 235 JR grade steel. To provide the staircases with lasting protection against the elements, the finished component is hot-dip galvanised in a continuous bath in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1461. This zinc coating forms an inseparable metallic bond with the steel and provides cathodic corrosion protection that lasts for decades. For environments subject to high chemical stress or as architectural highlights, we also offer the XSL series in high-quality stainless steel.
